Another good news to all Nigerians

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has said it will begin free screening for coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday 30 March, 2020.

NIMR is a medical research institute established by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the research institute establishment act of 1977, to promote National health and developments.

Professor Babatunde Lawal Salako, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, who is also the Director General of NIMR , Yaba Lagos, disclosed the commencement of free screning on his twitter handle (@LawalSalako) on Friday evening.

“Kindly visit our Website for appointment if you fall into categories of those who need the test, especially if you have come in contact with suspected case,” he said.

Meanwhile, when Daily Trust visited the website, there was no clear indicator of where to book the appointments on the website.

However, under “contact” category, there is a form where one can send a message to the organisation.

Before this new development, one can only get tested by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) through the state governments’ agencies in charge of the coronavirus pandemic.

Some Nigerians have complained they were not getting attention when they called the NCDC hotline to make inquiry about how to get tested.

As at Friday night, 81 cases of the coronavirus disease have been confirmed in Nigeria but public analysts believe the case may be well over 100 as many Nigerians lack access to facilities to ascertain their status.

NCDC just confirmed 14 new cases of the Coronavirus in Nigeria, making the country total 65.

2 new cases were reported from Abuja and Lagos reported 12 new cases.

This was coming shortly after the Lagos Minister of Health announced that 6 coronavirus cases will be discharged from the Isolation centre.

The index case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, an Italian man, has tested negative and has been discharged from the Isolation centre of Yaba Mainland Hospital where he was quarantined and treated.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on his official Twitter handle this night.

As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos, I am glad to inform you that the index case; the Italian gentleman is now negative. Through a combined effort of Lagos, Ogun State and Fed Health Authorities, we were able to limit the transmission of the virus to a single contact.

This involved aggressive contact tracing and containment strategies. However we now have several new imported cases and we hope we can apply the same contact tracing strategy along with social distancing to slow down the outbreak which may be brewing from these new cases.

The index patient consented to donating one unit of white blood (plasma) before he was discharged today. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target #COVID19 virus. The white blood plasma is frozen in our Bio-bank and will be useful in handling new cases.

The blood plasma will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19 yet. The patient appreciated the exceptional care and support given to him by staff of the infectious Disease Hospital,Yaba and all members of the EOC

The EOC team was extremely happy to bid the patient farewell. Once again, we will like to convey the enthusiasm of the team to do the very best possible in handling incidents of #COVID19” the governor wrote of Twitter

He also shared photos of the Italian man when he was in Isolation.

A Spanish youth coach has died after it was revealed he had the coronavirus and a previously unknown diagnosis of leukemia.

Francisco Garcia, 21, was coach of the junior team of Malaga-based club Atletico Portada Alta and had an unknown preexisting condition which was later revealed to be a form of leukemia. The leukemia was only discovered while he was in hospital receiving care after showing symptoms of the coronavirus, which Garcia was more susceptible to because of the preexisting condition.

The 21-year-old died on Sunday, making him the youngest person to have died from the coronavirus pandemic in Spain.

A club statement said: "From Atletico Portada Alta we want to express our most profound condolences to the family and friends of our coach Francisco Garcia who has unfortunately left us today. What will we do without you now, Francis? You were always there with us at Portada or wherever we needed you, helping. How are we going to continue to conquer kilometres in the league? We don't know how but for sure, we will do so for you. We will never forget you."

Spanish second division side Malaga FC paid tribute to Garcia in a tweet: "On behalf of the club we want to transmit to Atletico Portada Alta our most sincere condolences for the loss of one of their coaches, Francisco Garcia, and send our warmest wishes to his family and friends. Between all of us we must stop the COVID-19."

A Ghanaian actress, Fella Makafui has collapsed during her traditional marriage and was rushed to the hospital.
She collapsed during her traditional marriage ceremony to Medikal.
Makafui was said to have collapsed while she was on the dance floor with her husband, Medikal.
The bride has been rushed to the hospital to seek medical attention, GHPAGE reports.
It was later learnt that she came back to complete the engagement ceremony after she recuperated.
“Fella Makafui has regained consciousness and back to her engagement party!”, wrote Jackie Black, an entertainment journalist.
Makafui, born 19 August, 1995 in Volta Region, Ghana, is a Ghanaian actress and a philanthropist. She is known mostly for her role in ‘Yolo,’ Ghanaian TV series
Makafui started her career as a model, she later went into acting which brought her to limelight when she starred in the popular Yolo (You Only Live Once) television series.
Fella was featured in a couple movies like Swings, Once upon a family, Kanda River and Chaskele. In once upon a family, Fella got to work alongside Nigerian actress Mercy Johnson who played the lead role. She is currently the new ambassador of Castle gate Estate.

Popular Nigerian cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye better known as Bobrisky, has reportedly been detained at a police station in Lagos state.

According to reports, the controversial celebrity’s best friend, Tonto Dikeh is nowhere to be found at the moment.

Recalls the cross-dresser had engaged in a feud with his business partner, Cynthia over the ownership of his Bob wings business.

The lady claimed she contacted the cross-dresser to help her market her goods worth 22.5 million naira, which the controversial celebrity eventually did, but he converted the sum of 7 million naira into his personal account.

Cynthia filed a lawsuit and ordered for Bobrisky’s arrest and questioning over the missing fund.

No fewer than ten persons have been confirmed dead as suspected Fulani herdsmen strike in Okigwe council area of Imo state.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to sing49ja.com the attack yesterday which was unchallenged by the police or the Army happened around Ojukwu street, Umuchima, Owerri road by union bank and Six-to-six area.

The Imo State House of Assembly in reaction to the barbaric act have summoned the state’s Commissioner of Police Olaniyi Fafowora, to appear at the floor of the State Assembly next Tuesday.

Sing49ja.com reports that Fafowor’s invitation was sequel to the motion moved by Chidiebere Ogbunikpa, a member representing Okigwe state constituency, during plenary on Thursday where he registered his displeasure on the invasion of Fulani herdsmen in the area.

The motion reads, “whereas the police and other security agencies are charged with the responsibility of protecting lives and properties of Nigerian citizens, Okigwe people inclusive.

“The police and other security agencies have failed to protect the people of Okigwe local government area. This fact became clear with the type of sporadic shooting that took place in Okigwe town last night which left eight persons dead and not less than twelve others wounded.

“The hoodlums had a field day as they went street by street in Okigwe town with bike shooting and killing my people unchallenged by the police and other security agencies in the area including the army.”

“Be it resolved by this honourable House that Imo state government and the police to provide operational vehicles and other equipment or manpower to enable the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force fight armed gangs in Okigwe.”

Ogbunikpa further charged the police to wade into the situation, expressing fears that more persons may fall victim if the situation was not arrested.

Police in Ogun State have rescued 12 young women, including six heavily pregnant ones, from a suspected baby-making factory.
The baby factory was uncovered at Imedu Olori area of Mowe in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.Three suspects, including a female and two males, were also arrested in connection with the case.The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident in a statement Thursday, disclosed that one of the inmates who escaped from the illegal home reported to the police.Oyeyemi said the lucky inmate claimed that the alleged female owner of the baby-making factory identified as Florence Ogbonna lured her into the home.According to him, the owner used to contract the services of able-bodied men to sleep with and impregnate the inmates.After the pregnant inmates are delivered, their babies are allegedly taken away by the suspected owner, Oyeyemi said.
The police spokesman revealed that 12 ladies between the ages of 20 and 25 years were rescued by detectives from the baby factory.He said: “A suspected baby making home was on 28th of February, 2020 discovered at Imedu Olori area of Mowe in Obafemi Owode Local government area of the state.“The illegal baby factory was discovered when one of the inmate who escaped from the home reported at Mowe police station that she was lured into the home and held captive there for some time now.“She stated that the owner of the criminal home, one Florence Ogbonna, who lured her into the home, usually contract the service of some able-bodied men to sleep with them and impregnate them, and immediately any of them gave birth to a baby, such baby will be taken away by the said Florence Ogbonna to only God knows place.“Upon her report, the DPO Mowe division SP Marvis Jayeola mobilized his detectives to the scene where 12 ladies between the ages of 20-25years were rescued with six amongst them heavily pregnant.“Three suspects namely Florence Ogbonna, Chibuke Akabueze, and Chibuzor Okafor were arrested in connection to the case.”

The Nigerian Government has signed a $18.2m grant agreement with Japan to strengthen the capacity of network laboratories of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control for accurate medical and laboratory investigations.The Nation reports that Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, signed the agreement on behalf of Nigeria.

Agba praised the Japanese Government for fulfilling the promise made by Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, to Nigeria at the TICAD 7 Conference in Tokyo, last year.

Agba described the signing of the grant agreement as “timely”, against the backdrop of the recent outbreak of “the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) that has become a global concern and every country is doing its best to protect its territory and citizenry.”

The minister said that the initiative would help complement the efforts and commitment of the Nigerian Government in the fight against infectious diseases.

He reassured the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Yutaka Kikuta, who signed on behalf of the Japanese Government, of Nigeria’s commitment to creating an enabling environment to sustain the relationship between the two countries as well as the economic development of the Nigerian nation.

Kikuta said the grant Agreement was to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to strengthen its surveillance of infectious diseases and improve its capacity for early responses to public health concerns in Nigeria.

The locations, according to him, are the Central Public Health Laboratory in Lagos; LUTH Virology Laboratory; National Hospital, Abuja; University College Hospital, Ibadan; University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu; Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State; UBTH, Benin; and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital
